Eric Geoffroy

Eric Geoffroy is an expert in the Islamic religion and professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Strasbourg. He also teaches at the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium) and at the Open University of Catalogna (Barcelona).

He is a specialist in the study of Sufism and sanctity in Islam. His research extends to comparison of mysticism and to issues on spirituality in the contemporary world (spirituality and globalization; spirituality and ecology…).

He gives many lectures in the field of Sufism and more generally of Islamic culture all over the world (Europe, the Arab world, Africa, USA, Indian Ocean, Indonesia...).

So far, Eric Geoffroy has published nine books. One of his books has been translated into English by World Wisdom (USA): Introduction to Sufism : The Inner Path of Islam (2010). This book won the USA Best Book Award in the "Islam/Sufism" category.

Otherwise, Eric has collaborated on the English titles: Sufism – Love & Wisdom (World Wisdom, 2006) and Universal Dimensions of Islam (World Wisdom, 2011).

He is the author of numerous articles in magazines specializing in Islamology. He has also written more than twenty articles in the Encyclopedia of Islam 2 e and 3 e ed. Besides this, he has also participated in international conferences and made contributions to key reference books (Les voies d’Allah, Dictionnaire critique de l’ésotérisme, Dictionnaire du Coran, etc.). Eric Geoffroy himself works at organizing conferences and seminars (Alexandria, Damascus, Strasbourg…).

He is member of several international academic and editorial councils and committees, and takes part in some research groups at the international level, as well.

He has published articles in well-known magazines such as Le Monde des Religions, Le Point Hors Série, La Vie. Besides this, Eric Geoffroy has on many occasions been the guest of national and international TV broadcastings, such as: France 2 ; Egyptian, Moroccan, Algerian televisions, Al-Jazira, etc. He has also been interviewed in numerous radio broadcastings, such as : ‘ Cultures d’islam’, ‘ Les chemins de la connaissance’, ‘Tout un monde’, ‘A plus d’un titre’ (France Culture), RMC Moyen-Orient, Radio Suisse Romande…. Some of his articles are available on several websites: oumma.com, religioperennis.org, science-islam.net, buddhaline.net…, and some others are published in Arabic newspapers or magazines (al-Hayât, al-Watan, al-Râya, al-Nour, Majallat al-‘Arab al-dawliyya…).
